It has become a widely-held truism that digital technologies have changed nearly every aspect of human affairs. From the brightest paean to the 'digital revolution' to the bloodiest invective against Silicon Valley, nearly all eyes have turned to the unpredictable, unavoidable and unignorable forces of the digital. This, perhaps, has obscured a sibling topic—how society itself can shape digitality.

A vast swathe of digital experiences are produced by private entities—Google, Facebook, and all the firms that aspire to their stature. As businesses, they are beholden to economic imperatives, which all the more impacts the things they produce.

While much work exists exploring what digitality means for the world, less work exists on what the world means for digitality. This work aims to explore that gap by examining the means by which tech companies, as economic actors, embody and assert the market's politics and aesthetics through their products, further entrenching the market's influence on human affairs.
